Goal Setting: Preparing for your Best Life

Summary

To fly among the birds, to set foot on the moon, and to explore the depths of the ocean. These great feats of humanity were once just dreams to be achieved. Setting goals is how we have achieved so much in our history and how we will achieve even even more in the future. Here are 5 steps to set and stick to Goals.

Step 1: Think Big when Goal Setting

“I want to make the next Star Wars. I want to become a famous author.” These aspirations are the big picture, larger than life goals we set for ourselves. Write everything and anything that you want to achieve right now.

Step 2: Pick Your Favorite.

From the list of these larger than life goals. Select just one, select the one that makes you excited, select the one that brings a smile to your face at the very thought of it.

Step 3: Goal Checklist

Here is where we take these larger than life goals and adapt them to something that is attainable and concrete. When adapting the goals you must ask four questions.

  • Is this Goal
    • specific?
    • quantifiable?
    • something you can control?
    • too easy or too difficult?

The specific question allows you to figure out where you want to be and a direction to start. If we take the author example. We can narrow it down to a specific genre or type.

For the quantifiable question, it prevents us from constantly shifting the goal post farther and farther away from us. If we take the author example again, we might consider 1,000 people reading our book as famous but as that becomes out normal 1,000 people reading our book is no longer famous in our eyes.

For the something you can control question, this prevents us from setting a goal that we have no control over. An example of this would be “Wanting everyone to like you” As you have no control over other people’s feelings toward you. An adapted goal of this would be “Treating everyone kindly” as this is something you can control.

For the level of difficulty question, this greatly depends on timeframe and the goal. You want to make sure that is something that is just outside of reasonable within your timeframe.
